Activity 2: Exploring Wikis (Demonstration)

Aim: This exercise is designed to help participants explore existing uses of Wiki technology and to aid in thinking towards how Wikis could be used in their practice.

The following lists the Wikis that were demonstrated, outlines their uses and some of their key features that were highlighted.

     

Wikis

You may be interested in some of the following Wikis.

    

Wikipedia

  • Wikipedia is the worlds largest publicly editable Wiki. Open Wikipedia by clicking the following link:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/
  • Anyone can edit or create a page on Wikipedia, with or without registering
  • Wikipedia is peer moderated, that is, anyone can edit your changes if they disagree. A core group of 'trusted' users exist in the event of any conflicts

  • Activity: Try searching Wikipedia (left hand column) for the name of a well known published researcher in your practice - maybe even yourself! You never know what you will find.

     

Wikitionary

  • As the name suggests, Wikitionary is a Wiki based Dictionary:
    http://en.wiktionary.org/
  • Like Wikipedia, anyone is free to edit pages on Wikitionary
  • Wikitionary is not just an English language dictionary, but hosts content for over 272 langages!
  • Wikitionary contains file attachments, specifically Audio files! These samples help the user to pronounce the words they are reading about (If your computer supports playback)

  • Activity: Search for:
    pedagogic
    Note the difference headings, just like a word document might have as well as the link to the audio clip

   

ASEL Wiki

  • The Wiki you are currently using, found at:
    http://www.aselactive.com/
  • Notice that currently the "Edit Page" and "New Page" links towards the top left are disabled for you, but that you can still view pages

  • This Wiki has been configured to allow people to view our pages, but not to make changes to the content. If we wanted we could enable registrastion so that you could register on the ASEL site and begin to mke changes, meaning that only those willing to become part of the ASEL community and thus be accountable for their actions can make changes

   

UH Jotspot Wiki

  • This Wiki is registered to the University of Hertfordshire:
    http://uh-blu-collaborative.jot.com/
  • Notice how you are unable to see any content on this Wiki
  • Notice that there is no way to register to participate in this Wiki

  • This Wiki has been configured for use on an invitation only basis, and has been setup for use by a student cohort. You cannot log into this Wiki so that we can ensure that student information and work is protected

   

Gentoo Linux Wiki

  • The Gentoo Linux Wiki is a community Wiki setup to support the often difficult to understand world of the Linux operating system. This page contains some community contributed How To guides:
    http://gentoo-wiki.com/Index:HOWTO

  • Activity: In the contents click on:
    "1.3.1 Computers"
  • The select the article:
    "Gentoo on laptops"
  • Along the very top of the page is a button labled 'History' click it.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page, and in the bottom left click "Earliest". When was this document first created?
  • If you now select one of the circular "radio" buttons [o] from the list, and then a second one from the other column and click "Compare selected versions" you can see the changes in this document
